Iraca is a tropical palm leaf which is an important source of palm fibers. The very robust fibers are used for making making different things such as jewelry, handbags and home goods. In Colombia, the Usiacuri region is home to the most talented artisans who put much passion and energy into making beautiful works of art from Iraca fibers by hand.
There are different techniques when creating with Iraca palm fiber. For the "coil" technique, artisans bundle the palm in a row and then wrap around them with more palm creating various colours and patterns. As the palm is wrapped around the leaf stalk the artisan begins to coil the material. To join the various layers together they use a needle and with the same palm they sew a stitch every few inches to hold the layers together. With the "wire frame" technique the artisans weave the Iraca palm around the wire creating intricate lace-like patterns.
For the colors the palm is naturally dyed using natural and locally sourced seeds, leaves, bark, roots and minerals (walnut, black cedar). From these they get ranges of different colours from yellow gold, blue, green, terracotta, red wine, black and more.
